"Way Maker"

I really appreciate the lyrics of the worship song “Way Maker” by Sinach.

Especially these lines …

“You [God] are

Way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper

Light in the darkness

My God, that is who You are

You are

Way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper

Light in the darkness

My God, that is who You are”

I’m not sure what the original inspiration for that song was, but I wouldn’t mind betting it was based on Isaiah 43:19:

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

I remember a few years ago when we were out four wheel driving in the mountains and in some pretty rough terrain. The GPS system had all the latest map upgrades and were showing several tracks that were not on any printed maps we had. We saw one bush track on the GPS leading to the right of where we were and decided to explore it. But as we approached where the intersection was supposed to be, we couldn’t see any entry point, or anything like a turnoff. Nothing. It was as if the track just wasn’t there, but it was clearly visible on our GPS screen. What to do?

We climbed out of our vehicles to discuss our options. While the trip leader was addressing the convoy, I wandered to the edge of the track we were on and where this invisible track was supposed to be, and parted some branches and some bush. After a few seconds of staring I suddenly saw the track – it was there all along, but you had to look hard for it because the entry point was overgrown through disuse. I called to the group and we began chopping and clearing an opening and a path. After about 20 metres the track opened up and was driveable – there was lots of adventure on that track. We could have missed it assuming the GPS had got it wrong.

Sometimes it is hard to see the way ahead. We have the map, or the coordinates, but sometimes we still cannot see a way ahead. That’s what it can feel like. In these difficult days when everything has become COVID blurred and overgrown, it can sometimes be hard to see a way ahead, or believe Scriptures like Isaiah 43:19. But God is doing a new thing … He is making a way. He never forgets His people and has made a way long before we knew we needed one. It may be hard to see exactly where that is at times, and we may just have to step out of the vehicles of our busyness and detachment to really look hard and carefully, and maybe even part a few branches and bushes of doubt and discouragement here and there to find it. But it is there. We’ll suddenly see it as we ask Holy Spirit to open our eyes.

God is our way maker, in the wilderness of this world where He has deployed the church. The way is there. We just need to do our spiritual and faith due diligence, and be determined to find the way He has prepared for us.

It is there … always.

You are incredibly loved!
